Sample Interview Questions and Answers

Question 1: How would you determine the layout and sampling intensity for a timber cruise in a potential Forestry Riparian Easement or Rivers and Habitat Open Space easement?

To determine the layout and sampling intensity for a timber cruise, I would follow the guidelines outlined in the DNR Timber Cruising handbook. First, I would review the project's specific requirements and ensure that the methods used align with the program's goals and objectives. Next, I would conduct an analysis of the terrain and forest characteristics to identify areas with varying levels of complexity, including slope, aspect, and vegetation density. This information would inform my decision on where to place measurement points and how many to include. For example, in areas with dense canopy cover or steep slopes, I might use a more intensive sampling design to ensure accurate measurements. In areas with fewer complexities, a less intense design may be sufficient. Throughout the process, I would also consider factors such as accessibility, visibility, and potential for error when determining measurement point locations. Ultimately, my goal is to strike a balance between achieving statistically acceptable results while minimizing costs and ensuring efficient use of resources.

Question 2: You are responsible for conducting outreach and advertising for bids on timber cruise contracts. Describe the process you would follow to ensure that interested parties receive clear and accurate information about the project requirements.

To conduct effective outreach and advertise for bids, I would first review the project's specific requirements and develop a clear understanding of what is being sought in terms of services. Next, I would create an RFP (Request for Proposal) document that outlines all necessary details, including scope, timeline, budget, and evaluation criteria. This document would be made available to potential bidders through established channels, such as the DNR website or industry publications. Additionally, I would consider advertising in local newspapers or trade magazines to reach a broader audience. For those interested parties who may require additional clarification, I would establish a point of contact to answer questions and provide further information. Throughout the process, it is essential that I communicate clearly and accurately to avoid misunderstandings or misinterpretations. Once bids have been received, I would carefully evaluate each proposal against established criteria, taking note of factors such as experience, qualifications, pricing, and methodology. Ultimately, my goal is to select a bidder who not only meets but exceeds project requirements.

Question 3: You are responsible for maintaining the accuracy of cruise data and ensuring that it is statistically sound. Describe your process for reviewing and verifying data collected during timber cruises.

To ensure the accuracy and statistical soundness of cruise data, I would employ a rigorous review and verification process. First, I would thoroughly review all data collection methods, including GPS data, to verify that accurate measurements have been taken. Next, I would conduct an analysis of the data using software such as Atterbury SuperACE or other relevant tools to identify any anomalies or discrepancies. If issues arise during this process, I would investigate further and work with the cruiser to resolve them promptly. Throughout the review process, I would be mindful of potential biases or errors that could impact the accuracy of results. Additionally, I would cross-check data against established standards and benchmarks to ensure consistency and accuracy. Furthermore, I would consider consulting with colleagues or subject matter experts if necessary to validate findings. Ultimately, my goal is to ensure that all cruise data is accurate, reliable, and statistically sound.

For those interested parties who may require additional clarification, I would establish a point of contact to answer questions and provide further information. Throughout the process, it is essential that I communicate clearly and accurately to avoid misunderstandings or misinterpretations.
