Sample Interview Questions and Answers

Question 1: Describe a situation where you had to de-escalate a patient's behavior. How did you approach the situation and what was the outcome?

In my previous role as a Nursing Assistant, I encountered a patient who was experiencing a severe episode of anxiety. The patient became agitated and started yelling at the staff. I immediately assessed the situation and recognized that the patient needed a calm and empathetic approach to de-escalate their behavior. I took a step back, gave the patient some space, and spoke in a gentle tone, acknowledging their feelings and concerns. I also offered them a glass of water and helped them to take slow, deep breaths. After a few minutes of this calm interaction, the patient began to calm down, and eventually returned to their normal state. The outcome was that the patient was able to resume their daily activities without further incident, and the staff was able to continue providing care with minimal disruption.

Question 2: How would you maintain a safe environment for patients on a forensic ward? What steps would you take to prevent or respond to any potential incidents?

To maintain a safe environment for patients on a forensic ward, I would ensure that the ward is clean and free from any hazards. This includes regular inspections of living areas, proper disposal of waste, and ensuring that all equipment is in good working order. In terms of preventing or responding to potential incidents, I would stay vigilant and be aware of any changes in patient behavior or mood. If a patient becomes agitated or violent, I would immediately alert the nursing staff and follow established protocols for de-escalation and crisis management. This may include calling for additional support from security personnel, if necessary.

Question 3: How do you ensure that patients receive the care they need while also promoting their independence and autonomy?

In my experience as a Nursing Assistant, I have found that it's essential to strike a balance between providing supportive care and encouraging patient independence. To achieve this, I would engage with patients in a collaborative manner, actively listening to their needs and concerns. I would also involve them in decision-making processes regarding their care, such as choosing activities or therapies that meet their interests and goals. Additionally, I would encourage patients to take ownership of their daily tasks, such as grooming and hygiene, by providing guidance and support when needed. By doing so, patients can maintain a sense of autonomy while receiving the care they need.
