SEATTLE —Pike Place Marketis a cherished cornerstone of Seattle, giving visitors and locals an experience like no other.
“Everyone here knows and loves this place, and we all know there is nothing like this in the world,” said Rachel Ligtenberg, of the Pike Place Market Preservation and Development Authority.
This week the market unveiled theHeritage Display Project.
The new exhibits tell the market’s story through seven detailed murals along with five kiosks, according to organizers.
“To tell more of the story of the origins from 1907 to the market today,” said Ligtenberg.
The big reveal was hosted by tour guides who explained how each mural tells a different chapter in the markets 118 years.
“Before long Seattle residents could find everything they needed by shopping at the market,” said Patricia Gray of the Pike Place Market Foundation while pointing to one of the murals.
The project was years in the planning and created by the Pike Place Market Foundation, Friends of the Market, and the Pike Place Market Preservation and Development Authority, along with financial backing from 4Culture.
“That’s how we grow, by making sense of our past, allows us to move forward together and we need that now more than ever,” said 4Culture Executive Director, Brian Carter.
The Heritage Display Project is not a limited-time event. These storytelling mosaics will be in place to help first-time visitors and longtime shoppers learn how the market started and grew into the landmark it is today.
