SEATTLE — A man is recovering after being stabbed during a carjacking attempt in Seattle Tuesday, part of a string of similar incidents reported across the city this week.
Now, one of the victims is speaking out, sharing her experience in hopes of helping others stay safe.
“It was the getaway car,” recounted the woman, who asked not to be identified, recalling how a red minivan waited with its sliding door open as two men tried to carjack her in broad daylight.
It happened around lunchtime as she sat in traffic, second in line at a left turn lane at Rainier Avenue and South Alaska Street, in the city’s busy Columbia City neighborhood.
“I see somebody trying to get into one of the cars in front of me,” she said. “And I look over at my passenger side, and there is a guy, like, lunging for the door.”
Two men wearing black hoodies surrounded her car, grabbing the handles. Fortunately, her doors were locked.
“The two guys ran back into this minivan, and then the minivan sped through the light,” she said, adding, “It was a red Dodge Caravan. It was an older model. It had black hubcaps… it had like a black kind of grill or something. The other thing was, it was just completely tinted.”
Days later, the woman remains shaken by the attempt.
“My baby daughter, she could have been in the car seat,” she said. “And it keeps replaying in my mind, like, what if they had gotten in?”
Just one day earlier, another carjacking attempt in Seattle ended in violence. Just after 8 p.m. in a quiet neighborhood of Capitol Hill near Eastlake, a man sitting in his parked car was approached by two masked men. Police said they tried to steal his vehicle and stabbed him during the attempt.
They were unsuccessful in getting away with the car, and the victim is expected to recover. But just 30 minutes before that attack, another unsuccessful carjacking was reported two blocks away, said police.
“I feel really sad that there are some youth that are so misguided that this is what they’re doing,” the Columbia City victim said.
After reporting the incident to police, she shared a simple message for fellow drivers.
“I want everybody to just lock your cars as soon as you close the door,” she said. “This is so random, and it could be anybody.”
