SEATTLE — It has been one month since a Seattle man was reported missing while on a hiking trip in Southern California.
Billy Pierson went hiking with a friend in early August, but after that, the two went their separate ways and Pierson has not been seen since.
Pierson’s car was located at the Big Pine Canyon Day Use parking area on Sept. 10. It’s believed he may have attempted to climb Temple Crag, but multiple search and rescue operations in that area have turned up no clues. The Inyo County Sheriff’s Office is taking the lead on looking for Pierson.
Pierson’s family said he may have also traveled to North Palisades, Mt. Sill, Thunderbolt Peak or Mt. Aggasiz.
Teams from Mono County Search and Rescue, China Lake Mountain Rescue Group, Orange County Search and Rescue and the Bay Area Mountain Rescue Unit have contributed to the search. Sequoia-Kings Canyon National Park and the California Highway Patrol have lent helicopters to the operation.
The Inyo County Sheriff’s Office said severe weather, including hail, lightning, and early snowfall, has made search operations especially difficult. The agency continues to search for Pierson.
“The Inyo County Sheriff’s Office and Inyo County Search and Rescue are deeply grateful to all assisting agencies and volunteers who have dedicated their time, skill and energy to this search,” a spokesperson wrote in a press release. “We also extend our thoughts and support to Billy’s friends and family. Our thoughts remain with them as we continue this mission.”
Pierson is 5’9” and weighs 165 pounds. He was last seen wearing a navy blue or light gray 60-liter pack and black and yellow Scarpa Cruz approach shoes.
Anyone who has seen Pierson or knows anything regarding his last whereabouts is asked to call the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency line at 760-878-0383.
