SEATTLE —The American League Division Series is proving to be a business boost for shops and restaurants from Pioneer Square to SODO.
“Everyone’s rooting for the Mariners. Everyone’s got the deals and specials going on,” Jeffery Timm from Seattle added.
Businesses are making the most of this playoff run, from offering deals to games and music.
“The energy out here is so electric right now. The fans are out in full force. The beer garden is filling up,” The Hall on Occidental Owner Gary Szeredy explained.
TheAlliance for Pioneer Squarereports its restaurants and shops saw 116,000 people over Saturday and Sunday for the Mariners’ first two ALDS home games. There were additional crowds for the Seahawks and Sounders who also played at home.
Brendan Casey’s coffee shop and wine bar, Parlour Pioneer Square, off Yesler and Occidental got roughly three times its typical foot traffic and Casey was expecting similar numbers for the winner-take-all game 5.
“Every little bit helps, as you can imagine. Every small business nowadays needs more support than ever,” Casey said.
Sports are proving to be the big boost for the businesses still coming out of a pandemic slump, and as the historic neighborhood battles an at-times negative public perception due to visible homelessness and crime.
“How does the alliance hope to bring people back beyond the MLB postseason or the Seahawks season?” ’s Jackie Kent asked.
“We are really excited with all the events happening in the neighborhood,” Alliance for Pioneer Square Marketing and Communications Manager Angela Nguyen responded. “We find that people who haven’t been to the neighborhood in a while are really surprised to see what they find when they come. We have 25 new businesses and growing.”
Szeredy estimates the beer garden alone brings in thousands of customers, but he said it’s the feeling of community that’s even more meaningful.“We’ve only been around five months so getting the whole community together to see where we’re at and celebrate with us is so much fun,” Szeredy added.
