MILL CREEK, Wash. —A suspicious package was found outside of Swedish Hospital in Mill Creek, which prompted an evacuation and a response from the Washington State Patrol bomb squad on Tuesday afternoon.
Hospital officials reported that a staff member discovered the package this afternoon and immediately alerted authorities.
First responders received the call around 1:30 p.m., resulting in the swift evacuation of approximately 50 staff members and 21 patients from the hospital’s emergency department. By 3 p.m., all patients had been safely transported to other Providence Swedish hospitals in the area.
The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office and bomb squad technicians responded to the scene, deploying a drone over the area.
Sheriff’s deputies restricted access to the hospital property, and hospital staff diverted incoming patients to other area hospitals until the situation was resolved.
At 4:40 p.m., the hospital released a statement on the incident that reads:
“Today at 1:27 pm, a caregiver at Providence Swedish Mill Creek (13020 Meridian Ave. S., Everett) found a suspicious package outside an entrance to the facility in South Snohomish County. Out of an abundance of caution, the Snohomish County Sheriff’s office was immediately called, and the building has been evacuated. As part of that swift process, 21 Emergency Department (ED) patients are being transported by ambulance to other Providence Swedish hospitals in Snohomish and King counties, and about 50 other people, including staff, were also evacuated. A Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad was sent to the scene and is deploying a robot to investigate and mitigate any risk. The ED will remain on divert until an all-clear is called.”At around 5:05 p.m., the SCSO said bomb technicians were able to evaluate the package and determine it was no threat to the building. According to the SCSO, an “all-clear” was given, and the hospital was notified that they were okay to reopen.
