SEATTLE —Washington State gambling regulators are paying attention to the mafia-backed rigging and gambling scandal that has now engulfed the NBA.
On Thursday, theDepartment of Justice announced a sprawling pair of interconnected indictmentsthat accused an active NBA player and coach of a conspiracy that involved high-stakes betting and game fixing.
Active NBA player Terry Rozier is accused of leaving games early and providing inside information on games to benefit gamblers.
Portland Trailblazers coach Chauncey Billups is alleged to have helped set up illegal poker games that benefited mob families, and meets the description of a coach who told gamblers that they were holding players out of a game.

Former Nathan Hale High School star Jontay Porter, who played in the NBA, was suspended by the league indefinitely over similar allegations.
The agent said that unlike other states, a bettor cannot sit on their phone at a game and actively bet on a team, or even bet on a team that plays in Washington State. He says the state also primarily monitors off-shore betting, which is a risk in more ways than one.
“I do think the push for federal regulation after this is going to be very interesting,” added Jonathan Von Tobel, who is the senior NBA analyst for the VSin Sports Betting Network.
“Algorithms behind the scenes that are monitoring every single one of these numbers,” he said, “If you remember the Alabama baseball scandal where a friend of the head coach had come up to a counter and said, I want to vote $100,000 on Alabama baseball, that’s generally not a sum that you’re going to get on an Alabama baseball game.”
But Von Tobel also suggested that the scandal could lead to changes in the types of legal bets.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver had previously suggested his concern with so-called “prop bets” that allow someone to bet on an individual player.“I think that one of the things that we might see is a rush to maybe get rid of, at the very least, maybe not the props, but forcing betters to only choose on whether or not you want to bet the over. Because obviously, overs are much harder to fix from an outcome standpoint. You have to achieve your goals, whatever the market sets for you. Whereas an under, I can do what (Porter allegedly) did, I can do what Terry Rozier allegedly did, I can go into a game and then leave the game for whatever reason and fix it under.”
