SEATTLE —Emerson Elementary School in Seattle closed Friday, cancelling classes for Monday due to significant flooding caused by a broken water fountain, according to school officials.
The flood was discovered early Friday morning, causing major flooding on the second floor of the building, damaging classrooms, supplies, and materials on both floors of the school.
Principal Keyunda Wilson announcedthat classes will be canceled on Friday and Monday as the school will remain closed for an extended period to conduct substantial repairs, ensuring a safe and healthy environment for students and staff.
“Thank you for your patience, understanding, and flexibility,” Principal Wilson said in her letter on Friday.
The principal also said that they will continue to communicate any important changes and updates, including information about transportation options.
Families with children in the childcare program will receive direct communication from the facility, officials said Friday.
To support student meals, the district’s culinary services team will provide sack lunches for pick-up tomorrow and Monday from 9 a.m. to noon at Emerson Elementary and Lake Washington Apartments, 9061 Seward Park Ave S.Plans are underway to transition students to Old Van Asselt at 7201 Beacon Ave S, Seattle, with updates to be released soon.
