Major Chadwick “Chad” Brooks Dickerson was charged Oct. 22 by Pierce County Prosecutor Mary E. Robnett in connection with a July 12 crash that investigators say happened while he was driving under the influence.

Prosecutors said three generations of a family were in the vehicle Dickerson crashed into while under the influence, including children ages 3, 4, and 8, and a woman who was 7 months pregnant.

Dickerson worked for the sheriff’s office for 24 years. According to the sheriff’s office, Dickerson served assignments in patrol and worked as a school resource officer before working in the investigations division.

Before announcing his retirement effective Oct. 24, Dickerson served as a major in the sheriff’s office and remained under review as the criminal and administrative processes moved forward.

In a statement on Friday, Sheriff Keith Swan said,

Major Chad Dickerson’s retirement marks the conclusion of his employment with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office. This announcement does not change his scheduled appearance in November regarding charges of two counts of vehicular assault.

The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office will continue our investigation into employee conduct related to body camera usage and the handling of the collision. The investigation will specifically examine compliance with departmental policies during the incident.Updates will be provided as they are available.
