SEATTLE —Snow flying in the mountain passes is a reminder that winter driving has returned to the Cascades.
Nearly 1,500 maintenance workers across the state have geared up for the change of seasons, according to Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT).
Crews have been stocking sheds with salt and equipment and making sure more than 500 snowplows are ready to go.
Currently, forStevens Pass, traction tires are advised, and oversize vehicles are prohibited.
No restrictions forSnoqualmie Pass, WSDOT is reporting bare & wet conditions with slush in places.
ForWhite Pass, WSDOT reports snow, traction tires are advised, and oversized vehicles are prohibited. For a live look at live cameras on White Pass, clickhere.
Now is a good time to remind drivers that by law, they must be carrying a set of chains in their vehicle when crossing our mountain passes, even if they are not required to be put on at the time.
The State Patrol says if you are caught trying to cross the pass without chains, you face a 500-dollar fine.
It’s also a good idea to practice putting them on before you get into a situation where you are doing it for the first time on the side of the highway.
Starting November 1st, studded tires will once again be allowed on roads in Washington State. They are approved through March 31st of next year.
The state says every year, studded tires cause nearly 30 million dollars in damage to state roads. WSDOT suggests going with stud-free winter tread traction tires. They are more aggressive than all-season tires and don’t cause the same damage to roads.
