Drivers in western Washington should prepare for significant freeway disruptions this weekend as the WSDOT implements crucial maintenance on major highways including I-405 and I-5 to enhance safety standards under projects like Revive I-5 preservation at Ship Canal Bridge 🚧. Expect lane reductions southbound along both Interstates throughout Friday night into early Monday morning, impacting traffic flow significantly 💨. South of Seattle’s city limits on the Eastside side as well, all lanes will be closed intermittently in sections north and west bound I-405 from late tonight until midweek mornings next week due to essential construction activities 🛠️ Additional overnight closures are planned with varying lane impacts along segments including Northeast corridors leading up towards state Route 167. Westbound traffic on Interstate 90 between Mercer Island downtown and Seattle faces an early morning closure Friday night into Saturday dawn, ensuring thorough safety improvements without delays caused by weather conditions as previously communicated 🌧️ Stay tuned for real-time updates during these critical roadworks phases to navigate efficiently around closures effectively. SEATTLE — Drivers, beware.

Major freeway closures are set for this weekend in western Washington, closing several lanes of Interstate 405 and Interstate 5, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.

I-5 closures

Southbound lanes of I-5 are reduced over the Ship Canal Bridge in Seattle from 11 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31 until 5 a.m. Monday, Nov. 3. Drivers should expect lane reductions 24 hours a day over the weekend as part of the Revive I-5 preservation project.

During the closure, crews will be cutting concrete and installing new drainage structures on the bridge’s southbound lanes.

Express lanes are only open to southbound I-5 traffic over the weekend, so northbound drivers may also see some delays.

WSDOT has planned future closures over the Ship Canal Bridge on Nov. 21-24, Dec. 5-8 and Jan. 9-12. Additional northbound I-5 lane closures will take place in 2026.

I-405 closures

Over on the Eastside, all lanes of southbound I-405 from North Southport Drive and Sunset Boulevard Northeast to state Route 167 will be closed beginning at 11:59 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31. Lanes will reopen by 4 a.m. Monday, Nov. 3.

In addition, up to three lanes of northbound I-405 will be closed overnight between Northeast 124th Street and Northeast 160th Street from 11 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31 to 8 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1. The lanes will close again from 11 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1 to 8 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 2, and again at 8 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday, Nov. 3.

Several I-405 ramps will also be closed including the Northeast 128th Street Express Toll Lane off-ramp, the Northeast 160th Street off-ramp (Exit 22) and Northbound I-405 off-ramp to state Route 522 (Exit 23).

Weather could cancel the 405 construction and closures, but rain will not affect the I-5 lane reductions over the weekend, WSDOT said.

I-90 closures

All lanes of westbound I-90 from Mercer Island to Seattle will be closed beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31 until 6 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1.
