LANDOVER, Md. — The Seattle Seahawks looked like the better team from start to finish in the 38-14 win over the Commanders on Sunday Night Football.
Here are three takeaways from the win:
Seahawks starting quarterback Sam Darnold did whatever he wanted in the first half. The only thing that stopped Darnold was time and head coach Mike Macdonald’s decision to not utilize a timeout and let the clock go to :03 when replay ruled that Jaxon Smith-Njigba did not go out of bounds. Seattle scored on every possession in the half. Darnold went 16-16, 282 yards, 4 touchdowns and a perfect 158.3 passer rating. The only dominant first half in Seahawks history was when Shaun Alexander scored five touchdowns against Minnesota in 2002. Darnold completed 17 straight passes before he missed one. That tied a team record.
The Seahawks defense was constantly in Jayden Daniels’ face. Seattle pressured him on over half of his drop backs. They sacked him four times and hit him seven other times before, unfortunately, Daniels went out with a left arm injury. Thomas sacked him and he landed awkwardly on it.
Jaxon Smith-Njigba is the best receiver in the league. He leads the league with 948 yards receiving. He leads the league by 118 yards and he has played one less game due to the bye week. Smith-Njigba also tied the franchise record with his sixth 100-yard game, set by Steve Largent, and he’s only eight games into the season. Want more historical facts? Smith-Njigba is only the second player all-time to catch over 900 yards in his first eight games at 23-years-old or younger. He joins former Rams receiver Isaac Bruce. Bruce is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He accomplished the feat during the 1995 season.
