Sample Interview Questions and Answers

Question 1: Describe your experience with conducting comprehensive substance use assessments for adolescents in a secure juvenile justice setting. How do you ensure accuracy and cultural sensitivity in your evaluations?

In my previous role at a juvenile rehabilitation center, I conducted substance use assessments using standardized tools such as the ASAM Criteria and the SUD-10 screening instrument. I ensured accuracy by cross-referencing self-reported data with clinical observations and collateral information from staff. To address cultural sensitivity, I completed training on trauma-informed care and cultural competency, which helped me adapt my approach to respect the diverse backgrounds of the youth, including incorporating family values and language preferences when possible. I also collaborated with interpreters and cultural liaisons to ensure assessments were equitable and inclusive.

Question 2: How would you handle a crisis situation involving a youth exhibiting severe psychiatric distress in a group counseling session? Please provide an example of a de-escalation strategy you have used previously.

In a previous role, I encountered a youth who became verbally aggressive during a group session due to acute anxiety. I immediately applied the JR-approved de-escalation technique known as 'calm presence,' which involves maintaining a non-threatening posture, using a calm tone, and acknowledging the youth's feelings without judgment. I also redirected the group to a private space and provided the youth with a coping tool (e.g., deep breathing exercises). This approach de-escalated the situation within minutes, allowing for a safe resolution. I then documented the incident and collaborated with the clinical team to adjust the youth's treatment plan to include additional support for anxiety management.

Question 3: Explain your process for developing and implementing an Individualized Treatment Plan (ITP) for a youth with co-occurring substance use and behavioral disorders. How do you ensure collaboration with other stakeholders?

My process begins with a multidisciplinary team assessment, including input from psychiatrists, case managers, and residential staff to identify the youth's specific needs and goals. I then use evidence-based frameworks such as the Motivational Interviewing model to co-create the ITP with the youth, ensuring their voice is central. Collaboration with stakeholders is maintained through weekly team meetings, shared electronic health records, and regular communication with family members (with consent). For example, in a recent case, I coordinated with a school counselor to align the ITP with the youth's educational goals, resulting in improved engagement and reduced relapse rates during re-entry planning.
