Sample Interview Questions and Answers

Question 1: Describe a method you would use to assess the therapeutic recreation needs of a resident with complex behavioral and emotional challenges, and how you would tailor activities to support their development.

To assess a resident's needs, I would start with a comprehensive evaluation, including interviews with the resident, review of their treatment plan, and collaboration with other staff members and clinicians. I would observe their interactions during group activities and use standardized assessment tools to identify strengths and areas for growth. For example, if a resident struggles with social anxiety, I might design activities that gradually increase exposure to group settings, such as team-building exercises with clear roles and positive reinforcement. I would also incorporate sensory-based activities to help them regulate emotions and use art or music therapy to express feelings non-verbally. Regular feedback loops with the resident and their care team would ensure the activities remain aligned with their therapeutic goals.

Question 2: How would you handle a situation where a resident refuses to participate in a required recreational activity, and what steps would you take to ensure their safety and engagement?

First, I would approach the resident calmly to understand their reasons for refusal, ensuring they feel heard and respected. If the refusal is due to fear or past trauma, I would adjust the activity to make it less intimidating, such as offering a choice of alternatives or modifying the environment. For example, if a resident is reluctant to join a sports activity, I might suggest a low-impact option like yoga or a one-on-one game. If the resident's behavior escalates or poses a risk to themselves or others, I would follow facility protocols, which may include de-escalation techniques, involving a supervisor, or temporarily removing the resident from the activity while maintaining a supportive tone. Safety is prioritized through proactive communication and collaboration with the resident's care team to address underlying concerns.

Question 3: Explain how you would develop and deliver a staff training program on the principles of therapeutic recreation, ensuring it aligns with the facility's goals and resident needs.

I would begin by identifying the key areas of focus, such as safety protocols, adaptive activity design, and cultural competency, based on the facility's mission and resident demographics. Next, I would collaborate with subject matter experts, such as clinical staff and experienced recreation specialists, to create a curriculum that includes hands-on workshops, case studies, and role-playing scenarios. For example, a session on managing challenging behaviors might involve practicing de-escalation techniques with real-life scenarios. I would also incorporate feedback mechanisms, like post-training evaluations and follow-up sessions, to ensure staff can apply the training effectively. Finally, I would document the training and track its impact through resident outcomes and staff performance metrics, making adjustments as needed to maintain alignment with the facility's objectives.
