Business Resources Division (BRD) within the Department of Enterprise Services (DES) provides a number of services to state agencies, local governments, and non-profit organizations. Services provided by the division include Print and Mail Services, Fleet Operations, and Surplus OperationsDES provides centralized leadership in efficiently and cost-effectively managing resources necessary to support the delivery of state government services. About this position

The Equipment Technician 3 is a journey level position that will inspect, diagnose, make major and minor mechanical repairs, and performs preventative maintenance on various types of Fleet Operations vehicles and equipment. You will be expected to perform mechanical service on light-duty vehicles such as cars, trucks, vans, hybrid sedans, sport utility vehicles, electric vehicles, dual fuel sedans, and larger vehicles such as box trucks, box vans, street sweepers, flatbed trucks, and trash trucks. These vehicles are powered by a variety of fuels to include gasoline, E-85 Ethanol, diesel or electricity. This position will be responsible for providing safe operational vehicles through their life cycles by updating maintenance records in Asset Works Fleet Management computer system for use by the Washington State Fleet Operations customers.

Some of the essential duties will include operating and maintaining forklift and pallet jacks according to policy, regulations and be able to recognize standards. The selected incumbent will inspect the lift before operating to ensure it is safe to use, will document potential maintenance issues, and document the inspections. Reporting unsafe equipment, unsafe operation and accidents will need to be conveyed immediately to the supervisor or other appropriate entity. Maintaining a current forklift operator’s certificate is also required. 

This position reports to the Equipment Tech Supervisor.

Duties

Some of the duties you will perform
Perform technical and mechanical repairs on vehicles

  • Diagnose and repair vehicle drivability problems, electronic engine control module issues, body control module issues, troubleshoot and repair fuel injection problems
  • Diagnose and repair emission control devices
  • Diagnose and repair proximity readers, transponders and key fobs 
  • Evacuate and recharge air conditioning systems 
  • Troubleshoot and repair anti - lock brake system (ABS) problems
  • Diagnose and repair tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) problems, calibrate and adjust tire pressures in accordance with factory recommendations 
  • Install and calibrate AGILE systems, Remove AGILE systems 
  • Replace worn brake components, turn brake rotors and drums, flush hydraulic brake systems, replace worn suspension parts, shock absorbers, struts, steering racks, wheel bearings and ball joints
  • Remove and replace in - tank electronic fuel pumps and catalytic convertors
  • Flush cooling systems and refill 
  • Replace hybrid cooling pumps, and heater blend door actuators, replace heater cores and radiators. Install CB radios 
  • Mount and balance tires 
  • Commissioning new vehicles being put into service; prepare used vehicles for reissue or for projects
  • Decommission vehicles going to surplus
  • Test drive vehicles before and after repairs
  • Perform vehicle up-fitting including installation of law enforcement partitions, lighting and storage bins/shelving

Perform Preventative Maintenance services in accordance with factory recommendations

  • Perform bumper to bumper safety inspections 
  • Perform maintenance on engine oil/filter services, transmission oil/filter services, differential services, transfer case services, battery replacements, windshield wiper arm/blade replacements 
  • Check tire pressure / tread wear and document 
  • Check brake lining thickness and document
  • Check fluids and refill as needed
  • Check interior and exterior lighting, horn and seat belts for functionality
  • Reset maintenance minder when complete

Update vehicle records and work orders in Fleet Operations Maintenance Management Information System (Asset Works) on a personal computer

  • Enter data on the work orders in the “comments section” capturing information gathered while working on vehicles and present a copy of the work order to the customer when picking up their vehicle
Perform other duties as requested
  • Conduct special projects as needed

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Completion of a two (2) year Automotive Technical school, with an AA degree in Automotive Technology

  • Recognized as a journey level automotive technician in a union
[OPTION 3]
  • Five (5) years of experience of applicable work

  • Knowledge of operation of equipment, tools, machines and vehicles to meet work demands
  • Ability to inspect, diagnose, adjust, maintain and repair vehicles and equipment based on time restrictions

  • Employees must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook applications
  • Must be able to communicate clearly in writing

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment

  • Valid Washington State driver’s license
  • Supplying a complete set of personally owned industry standard hand tools is required
  • Ability to lift/move/transfer objects up to 40lbs.
  • Ability to perform operational and maintenance tasks for repairs which require stooping, pushing, pulling and standing on concrete for extended periods of time
  • Forklift certification: Ability to operate and maintain forklifts and pallet jack 
    (Forklift training and certification will be provided onsite within 6 months of employment)
  • Must wear and use required PPE for this position
