Our Worker’s Compensation Adjudicator 1 in the Self-Insurance program of the Insurance Services Division contributes to the economic well-being of the state by providing expert services to the self-insured community and ensuring that injured workers receive relief as it pertains to their industrial insurance benefits.

The Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) is a diverse state agency dedicated to the safety, health, and security of Washington's workers. As administrators of the state's workers' compensation system, we are similar to a large insurance company, providing medical and limited wage-replacement coverage to workers who suffer job-related injuries and illness. Our rules and enforcement programs also help ensure workers are paid what they are owed, that children's and teens' work hours are limited, and that consumers are protected from unsound business practices.

Insurance Services is the largest division within the agency and administers one of the premier workers’ compensation organizations in the nation serving over 3.8 million employees working for 260,000 employers.

Duties

Some of what you’ll do:

• Reviews, adjudicates, and assures decisions are made within management expectations and in accordance with RCW’s, WACs, Case Laws, and Department rules and policies.  
• Interpret facts and apply laws and rules to determine injury claim allowance.
• Issue legal orders and resolves protests on medical only claims.
• Reviews and adjudicates bill disputes from PT/OT/MT and interpreter providers. 
• Works on special projects, participates in work process improvement teams, and serve on other various committees.
• Reviews and adjudicates claim consolidation requests for duplicate claims with same date of injury.
• Receives and processes Self-Insured Electronic Data Reporting System (SIEDRS) Data Change Requests.

Qualifications

Required:

High School diploma or equivalent AND Three (3) years of experience working with insurance claims or in claims/insurance adjusting, claims investigations, paramedical occupation, disability management, claims risk management/loss control, medical billing, medical insurance, paralegal personal injury services or closely related field.

AND

Must be able to type at a minimum speed of 40 words per minute, accounting for errors.

Equivalent education/experience.

The ability to take action to meet the needs of others.

Desired: 

• Adjudicative claim experience in the State Fund sections of the Department of Labor and Industries or the Self-Insured Community.
• Ability to apply appropriate force to push/pull items weighing up to 30 pounds using hands, carts, and other work aids.
• Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time.
