CLALLAM COUNTY, Wash. — A Port Angeles man remains hospitalized after he was stabbed and left on a Sequim roadside Sunday evening, prompting a multi-county search that ended with two arrests and seven children taken into protective custody.
The incident began on Sunday around 8:10 p.m. near Sequim when Clallam County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the report of an assault after the person reported seeing a fight inside the vehicle.
They arrived to find a 69-year-old man, a DoorDash driver, who had been stabbed in the neck. He was airlifted for treatment and was in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in serious condition, according to Harborview.
He told first responders while being transported that he had picked up a large family near Deer Park on Highway 101 before the incident occurred.
Deputies said the family included a 30-year-old man, a 29-year-old woman, and seven children between the ages of 6 months to 9 years old. They had been contacted twice earlier in the day before the car theft — once during a Sequim disturbance and later when Well was arrested for reckless driving in Port Angeles before being released.
The family was also the subject of a welfare check just half an hour before the stabbing when a caller reported them stranded on Highway 101.
The couple drove away in the victim’s blue Lexus RX300 and an overnight search across Clallam County failed to locate the vehicle.
At approximately 4:57 a.m. on Monday, Kitsap County sheriff’s deputies found the Lexus parked in the middle of a county roadway with its lights off. Well was in the driver’s seat, Lopez in the passenger seat and the seven children in the back.
Deputies found a significant amount of blood in the driver’s seat area and recovered a bloody knife from Well’s pocket.
Well and Lopez were arrested on suspicion of possession of a stolen motor vehicle and reckless endangerment involving domestic violence.
The children were placed in protective custody and referred to Child Protective Services. Prosecutors have not yet filed formal charges against the parents, whose names are being withheld pending charges. Both are scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.
