PUYALLUP, Wash. — A pair of stolen Nike shoes led Pierce County deputies to a suspect allegedly connected to a string of vehicle prowls in Puyallup’s Gem Heights neighborhood.
Deputies responded around 12:30 a.m. on Oct. 28th after a resident reported their shoes stolen from their porch. Multiple callers also reported vehicle prowls on the same street that night.
Deputies spotted a white vehicle speeding recklessly out of the neighborhood and attempted a traffic stop, but the driver fled. Deputies later found the vehicle in a ditch, and a man and woman with a dog emerged from nearby bushes. The Sheriff’s office said deputies towed the suspect’s vehicle after spotting unopened LEGO sets, clothing with security tags, and other potentially stolen items inside.
Ring camera footage confirmed the 48-year-old man was the shoe thief. Deputies also found another person’s ID in his pocket. As deputies were searching the neighborhood, they discovered three prowled vehicles left open and one of them belonged to the ID’s owner, according to the sheriff’s office.
The suspect was booked into Pierce County Jail on charges including vehicle prowling, theft, eluding, driving with a suspended license, and possessing another person’s identification. The sheriff’s office said the 42-year-old woman was released with her dog, as deputies found no evidence of her involvement.
