CLALLAM COUNTY, Wash. —Two anglers who showed off their catch on a livestream while fishing in the Quillayute River also livestreamed their fishing violations.
Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) officer McOmber received a tip about the livestream, which was quickly found with help from WILDCOMM dispatchers.
As McOmber drove to the location, several clips were made from the stream showing a man and another angler illegally removing fish from the water and showing them to the camera, according to a WDFWFacebook postdated Oct. 17.
The officer arrived, hiked downriver to the drift boat’s location and watched two people as they continued to livestream and fish. When he asked them to row to shore, the person who was livestreaming quickly ended the broadcast.
When questioned, one fisherman admitted he’d been fishing with a barbed hook and he didn’t want to get caught. The officer said as he continued to investigate, he learned that one of the anglers continued to fish after reaching their limit, had failed to record his salmon on his catch card, and violated freshwater salmon handling rules.
Both anglers were cited.
According to the WDFW, one of the anglers violated the handling rules by removing the fish from the water to show it on the livestream because they had already met their limit but continued to fish.“It is unlawful to totally remove, salmon, steelhead, or Dolly Varden/bull trout from the water if it is unlawful to retain those fish, or if the angler subsequently releases it. This rule is in place to help with handling mortality. It is not only illegal, but it is also one of the best things anglers can do to ensure we have these fisheries in the future,” WDFW said in the post.
