PARKLAND, Wash. — The family of a young woman who was killed in a crash in Parkland on Wednesday is remembering her as an ambitious and hard-working young woman.
“He shouldn’t be out; he shouldn’t be free. He took the life of a woman I love very much,” said Gabriel Pangelinan, the boyfriend of Paola Parbol Arredondo, to a judge on Thursday.
Paola Parbol, 20, was killed Wednesday, just before 9:30 a.m., when deputies say a car driven by 47-year-old Donald Rownan crashed into her at the intersection of 112th Street and Ainsworth Avenue in Parkland in Pierce County.
Deputies said they tried to pull Rownan over for a Department of Corrections warrant but that he sped off, and around 30 seconds later, ran through a red light at 80-miles-per-hour, crashing into Parbol’s car.
Parbol died at the scene.
“I don’t want no bail for him, he should be sentenced to life,” said Pangelinan.
Pangelinan said they had just celebrated one year of dating and were living together. He said goodbye to her and that he loved her before she left for class that day, not knowing he would not see her again.
Pangelinan’s mother, Julz Mamaril, heard about the crash from social media earlier in the day, and when her son said he couldn’t get a hold of Parbol and shared her phone location, they put the pieces together.
“All I remembered was Ainsworth and 112th, and when I saw her location, I just knew that it was her,” said Julz Mamaril.
Mamaril also addressed the court Thursday, trying to speak through tears, about the young woman she considered to be like a daughter.
“Such a young life taken away from us,” said Mamaril. “She is the best part of our lives.”
Parbol is remembered as hard working, ambitious, and as someone who loved children. She was studying criminal justice at Pacific Lutheran University and worked part time at a daycare.
Pangelinan said she loved the beach and swimming, and that she loved the color pink.
“She studied criminal justice because of people like him,” said Mamaril, referring to the suspect in court.
Rownan had a Department of Corrections warrant for violating his community custody conditions. He had just been released from jail in August for burglary-related charges.
The judge set bail at $750,000 on Thursday.
“If there’s anything that’s regretful, it’s his parents birthing him. I hope that he sees her face even when he sleeps,” said Mamaril. “He doesn’t deserve to be here. She deserves to be here.”
