THURSTON COUNTY, Wash. —TheThurston County Sheriff’s Office(TCSO) has announced the hiring of two Deputy Cadets, a move aimed at attracting young adults into law enforcement, Sheriff Derek Sanders said.
This initiative follows two years of negotiations on job duties, benefits, training, and equipment, Sheriff Sanders said, “These positions will be crucial in making sure our commissioned patrol deputies are spending less time doing administrative tasks and more time on the road doing police work. Cadet positions will be an incredible opportunity for applicants under the age of 21 to get into a well-paid law enforcement position with medical benefits to kick off their career.”
The cadet positions, open to applicants aged 18 and older, offer full-time paid employment with TCSO, according to the Sheriff’s office.
Although cadets do not have arrest authority, they will play a crucial role in supporting corrections and TCSO patrol teams, Sheriff Sanders said.
Cadets will drive marked TCSO patrol cars with “Cadet” on the side, wear distinct uniforms, and their duties include transporting offenders, assisting at car crash scenes, and logging evidence, according to Sheriff Sanders.
They will receive comprehensive training and be authorized to carry tasers for self-defense or to protect others in emergencies. “These positions will be crucial in making sure our commissioned patrol deputies are spending less time doing administrative tasks and more time on the road doing police work.
