SEATTLE — Voters in South Seattle, including Beacon Hill, Rainier Valley, Columbia City and the Chinatown-International District, will head to the polls in November to elect a representative for City Council District 2. The district includes some of the city’s most transit-dependent neighborhoods, where rising housing costs, public safety and transportation challenges are top concerns for residents.

Two candidates with deep community roots and different areas of expertise are running: Eddie Lin and Adonis Ducksworth.

Adonis Ducksworth grew up on Beacon Hill and currently lives in Rainier Beach with his wife and two daughters. He has extensive experience in city transportation policy, serving as a transportation policy adviser in Mayor Bruce Harrell’s office and previously as deputy chief of staff at the Seattle Department of Transportation.

Eddie Lin has worked as an assistant city attorney for eight years, focusing on housing issues through the Office of Housing. The son of an immigrant, Lin says his years in City Hall have given him insight into how policy decisions affect families, businesses and the broader community.

Ducksworth says the city needs “more housing in more places — and we need it now.” He supports zoning that accommodates social, affordable and market-rate housing throughout Seattle to address the city’s housing crunch.

Lin says working families are being pushed out of the city. He proposes taxing the largest corporations to fund housing, shelter and services for residents who are unhoused, aiming to make housing more accessible for families.

Both candidates stress that safety goes beyond policing.

Ducksworth emphasizes giving young people options “besides turning to the streets,” including recreation and social programs that can help prevent crime before it happens.

Lin supports expanding the city’s public safety workforce, calling for more mental health professionals, behavioral health specialists and police officers who reflect the communities they serve.

South Seattle relies heavily on public transit, including buses and light rail, as well as safe streets for walking and biking.

Ducksworth focuses on slowing traffic and redesigning streets to improve safety and accessibility for all users.

Lin supports lane reductions to create more space for bikers and pedestrians and increasing housing density in neighborhoods to encourage walkable streets and connected communities.
