EATONVILLE, Wash. — Editor’s note: Some of the content in this story may be disturbing.

A dog is safe and recovering after a disturbing case of alleged abuse that triggered public outrage and prompted an urgent investigation in South Pierce County.

The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office said it received a video over the weekend showing a man violently kneeing a dog and punching its head. It was captured on a neighbor’s Ring doorbell camera. Prosecutors in Pierce County charged the ex-boyfriend of the dog’s owner, Luke McNeley, with animal cruelty in the second degree on Tuesday.

“We’re thankful for everyone that reported this case,” said Deputy Carly Cappetto, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office.

The dog — a corgi named Doc — is shown being picked up and struck with a knee. The video includes the dog yelping in pain twice.

A neighbor captured the incident and immediately called 911.

“Animal control seized the dog with a warrant and took it to the vet,” Cappetto said.

A full veterinary evaluation found no major injuries, though Doc was given pain medication. The dog is now being cared for at the Humane Society.

Doc’s owner has until Nov. 3 to file an appeal and post bond in order to regain custody of the dog.
