PIERCE COUNTY, Wash. —A tragic accident occurred during a trick-or-treating event at a park in Roy when a giant tree cracked in half and fell on several booths, killing a man and trapping five to seven people underneath, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO).
The incident happened just after 1 p.m., with around 40 to 80 people in attendance, PCSO officials confirmed.
Deputy Carly Cappetto from the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office reported that a 31-year-old man was killed.
Several others suffered injuries ranging from serious to minor, a total of three people were transported to the hospital, according to PCSO.
The community, described as secluded and far from the nearest hospitals, is facing challenges due to limited medical resources. “When we have a major event like this where several people have significant injuries, it becomes a triage situation,” said Cappetto.
The deputy emphasized the importance of assessing trees to prevent such accidents, noting, “We hear about trees falling on homes, cars, and occasionally those freak accidents happen. And it is this time of the year we see a lot of trees falling in a gust. If anything, we learn from this — we should be assessing trees on whether they need to come down, and maybe these deaths could be preventable.”This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
