THURSTON COUNTY, Wash. —The Thurston County Public Health & Social Services Department is advising residents to steer clear of unpermitted street vendors due to significant health risks.
Over the past year, multiple vendors have been shut down for operating without valid food permits, posing a threat to public health and affecting the local economy by undermining businesses that comply with safety regulations, Thurston County Public Health & Social Services Department officials said Friday.
Recent concerns have centered around vendors near the ARCO and Hobby Lobby parking lot at 402 Sleater Kinney Rd SE, Lacey, according to the Thurston County Public Health & Social Services Department.
Since August 2025, the county’s Food and Environmental Services Section has received numerous complaints about these vendors, known as Tacos Los Prohibidos and Tacos Gardenias, health officials said.
Health inspectors have conducted over five site visits, leading to immediate closures due to serious food safety violations, according to the Thurston County Public Health & Social Services Department.
These included improper food storage, lack of temperature monitoring, absence of handwashing stations, and questionable water sources, county health officials said.
The county has noted an increase in such unpermitted vendors, while emphasizing that six permitted vendors operate safely within the area.
These vendors display a Thurston County Permit visibly, undergo inspections at least twice a year, and prepare food in licensed commercial kitchens.
Officials are urging the public to prioritize their health by choosing permitted food vendors.
