SEATTLE —Seattle police say a man intentionally rammed his SUV into a van with a family inside because the road was too narrow.
The van then caught fire, but the occupants of the vehicle, a married couple in their 40s, and their two children, ages 7 and 10, escaped without injury.
The incident happened around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday in Seattle’s Wallingford neighborhood. Police said the suspect, a 25-year-old man behind the wheel of an SUV, and a van were driving the opposite direction on Meridian Avenue North and N 40th St, when they both had to stop because the road was too narrow due to parked cars.
As the driver of the van tried to find a place to move over, the suspect became “visibly angry, yelling through his windshield, and started throwing his hands up,” according to the police report. He then flipped off the victims and rammed the front end of their van, Seattle police said.
The crash pushed the van backward and caused it to catch fire. The family got out and was OK.
The van had major front-end damage, including a crumpled hood, a smashed driver’s side front fender, and burn marks. The Seattle Fire Department said the van was in flames when crews arrived.
The suspect’s SUV had minimal damage.
The mother, who said she was scared for the safety of her kids, called 911 and told the man to stay at the scene. When officers arrived, she told them she feared for her life when the man rammed their van and “she felt it was done on purpose out of anger,” the police report said.
The driver of the SUV was arrested and booked into jail for investigation of four counts of felony assault for using a vehicle as a deadly weapon. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
