SEATTLE —A Seattle mother is accused of killing her 4-year-old son after the child was found stabbed to death in a bathtub last week.
Prosecutors allege that on Oct. 16, Joelene Louise Rodriguez, 45, murdered her son with premeditated intent, killing him with “deliberate cruelty.”

Officers were sent to an apartment at 6620 Roosevelt Way NE by the child’s father, who called 911 to report that the mother of his child had tried to cut herself. While on the line with dispatch, the father returned to the apartment and discovered the boy’s body and began to scream on the phone that she had killed his son.
The child, who was nonverbal and autistic, was found in a bathtub filled with bloody water and had suffered multiple stab wounds, including a deep chest wound that penetrated his lung.
Prosecutors state that while the boy’s wounds were severe, none of them would have been immediately lethal – meaning that Rodriguez would have had time to call for help, and that her son would have suffered significantly before finally dying.
According to the probable cause document, Rodriguez confessed the crime to officers at the scene, stating, “They made me do it.” At the time of the killing, Rodriguez was the child’s primary parent.
Rodriguez has been charged with first-degree murder with a deadly weapon enhancement. The state has requested a $5 million bail, citing the extreme danger Rodriguez poses to the community. Her arraignment is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Thursday.
