SEATTLE — The good news for Seattle sports fans Monday night: the Seahawks cruised to a 27–19 win over the Houston Texans at Lumen Field.
But the result, while welcome, may have been overshadowed by heartbreak elsewhere.
With Game 7 of the American League Championship Series playing out at the same time, many fans inside Lumen Field found themselves glued to their phones, watching the Mariners’ World Series hopes slip away in real time.
Before the game, one Seahawks ticketholder said, “I’m beyond nervous. Super nervous. Stressed out. All those things.”
There’s significant crossover between Seahawks and Mariners fans, and for many in the stadium, it was a tense emotional juggling act.
“Had I known Game 7 was happening, I’m not sure I’d be walking in right now,” one fan admitted.
Fan-shot video shows the moment of the Seahawks’ second touchdown, which offered a much-needed lift in spirits just four minutes after the Mariners lost their lead in Game 7.
Throughout the night, fans streamed the Mariners game on their phones, balancing cheers for touchdowns with anxiety over the baseball score.
Inside the stadium, monitors showed Game 7 updates, and fans reacted to both games in real time. After the final out signaled the end of the Mariners’ postseason run, some fans searched for perspective.
“Honestly, the highs are high and the lows are low… it takes you on a roller coaster. And why else do people ride roller coasters, right? For the thrill,” a fan said.
Not all hope is lost. Their sentiment was echoed in a comment left on We’s Instagram post following the game:
“My heart hurts tonight, but it’s full of pride too. You fought with everything — heart, grit, and joy — right until the last out. Game 7 didn’t go our way, but this season reminded us what belief feels like. You brought the city together, gave us chills, made us dream again. I’ll always stand with you, win or lose — because the tide will rise again.”
