SEATTLE — A Seattle mother is accused of stabbing her young son multiple times in the chest, hands and leg, then leaving him to die in a bathtub, according to charging documents from the King County Prosecutor’s Office.
Jolene Louis Rodriguez, also known as Jolene Louis Evans, is charged with one count of first-degree murder with premeditated intent following the death of her 4-year-old son. If convicted, she could face life in prison.
Rodriguez remains in jail on $5 million bail; her arraignment is set for Thursday, Oct. 23.
The 4-year-old boy’s father went to the Cedar Crossing Apartments on Oct. 16 after Rodriguez said she attempted suicide, court documents state. Inside, the man found his son lying facedown in a bathtub of bloody water and he called 911.
Seattle police officers responded and ordered 45-year-old Rodriguez out of the apartment, arresting her. She reportedly told officers, “they made me do it” and that “he’s gone.”
When officers picked up the boy from the bathtub, a chef’s knife fell from his body, court documents state. A paring knife was later found wrapped in a towel in the bathtub.
As Seattle Fire Department crews were attempting to save the child, Rodriguez said “they can’t help him … it’s been too long,” documents state. Neighbors told police the boy had autism and was non-verbal.
The King County Medical Examiner’s Office found the boy was stabbed three times in the chest, one of which punctured his lung. The boy also had several stab wounds to his hands and multiple injuries to his Achilles tendon as if someone was “sawing away” at his heel, documents state.
However, these injuries occurred before the boy died, documents state.
Medical examiners reported the boy would’ve died within an hour which “which would have provided [Rodriguez] plenty of time to call for help and get her 4-year-old son medical attention.”
Neighbors held a candlelight vigil on Sunday. Many recalled seeing the boy around the apartment complex.
“We can’t even try to understand it, but we can at least come together to try and heal,” said Taner Starks, who helped organize the vigil with other residents.
