GRANT COUNTY, Wash. —A live World War II-era hand grenade caused quite a stir at Tacoma Police Department (TPD) headquarters this week when someone brought it into the lobby for disposal.
Police said while the person meant well, old explosives are still dangerous decades later.
“please don’t bring grandpa’s war souvenirs to the lobby,” TPD said in a Facebook post.
TPD’s explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) team, with help from the Army’s EOD team, removed and disposed of the grenade.
Officers said anyone who finds an explosive device should not touch it and call 911.
Meanwhile, in Grant County,a toddler found a live hand grenadein the front yard of a family’s home Monday night.
The 3-year-old was carrying the grenade when they walked into the house in the town of Hartline. It, too, was the type of grenade used in WWII.
The toddler was not hurt. The parents called 911, and a bomb squad responded to safely remove the grenade. It’s unclear how the grenade ended up in the family’s yard or how long it had been there.
