SEATTLE —Nearly a year after a bomb cyclone wreaked havoc in Issaquah, the community has made significant strides in recovery, though some repairs to private properties are still ongoing.
Tree limbs came down on Allyson Riley’s home last year, causing devastating damage.
“The church came over and cleared all the trees out, and then we called the contractor, so it took a few months for it to be able to start,” she added.
Puget Sound Energy (PSE) reported that over half a million customers lost power during that storm, marking it as the worst event they have faced in nearly two decades.
Though PSE had dozens of crews on standby ahead of the storm, it ultimately took more than 160 line crews, both locally and from out of state, eight days to fully restore power to everyone.
“We spent a good part of the last year upgrading that a lot,” Tracy added. “It looks a little different now than it did back then.”
PSE has since upgradedtheir outage mapto provide more accurate information during emergency events and have plans for more community resource centers for future storms.
“When we woke up the next day, we were met with more of an apocalyptic type scenario, and really, I don’t think anyone in Issaquah expected what happened to happen,” Jared Schneider, emergency manager for the city of Issaquah, said.
The city received over 300 damage reports and had damage to 26 structures.
According to data from the Small Business Administration, more than $5.3 million in disaster loans were disbursed in King County alone.
In response, city officials report they’ve had more people out at their community preparedness events and plan to have more charging stations at resource centers across the city for future storms.
“This was a wake up call to people that it’s like, ‘Wow, you know, I could be without power for three, seven days, and I need to make sure that I have my household really prepared for this event,'” Schneider said. For storm preparation tips from PSE, visit their outage resources pagehere.
