CHEHALIS, Wash. — A dramatic law enforcement pursuit unfolded after Chehalis Tribal Police reported witnessing an alleged domestic assault near the Lucky Eagle Casino in Chehalis.
Officers said “a female was seen being slammed onto the ground by a male before the car fled a traffic stop and the female could not get out,” according to a social media post by Thurston County Sheriff Derek Sanders describing the incident.
Sanders said in the post that he initiated a pursuit, but “the vehicle escaped.” The chase resumed when “a county unit reinstated a pursuit on I-5 northbound and lost the vehicle a second time in heavy traffic.” He said he reached speeds of up to 145 mph and that additional air support that was requested was unavailable.
The post said neither the suspect nor the victim were located after the pursuit was stopped. Sanders believes this chase is representative of issues law enforcement faces daily.
“This call represents the challenges that [law enforcement officers] face when determining when to pursue and when to terminate, and the autonomy that comes with making hard decisions like this,” Sanders’ post read.
The decision to end the chase, he said, was out of concern for the victim.
“While I’m still fearful for the victim’s safety, the decision to continue pursuing must be continuously evaluated and I did not want to see her harmed in a high-speed crash, which was likely the only way the suspect was going to stop,” Sanders’ post read.
Chehalis Tribal Police are investigating.
