BREMERTON, Wash — Police in Bremerton say they have arrested a suspect accused of breaking into the ferry terminal and damaging two vessels.
On Oct. 20, officers responded to a reported vandalism and discovered that one man had broken in just after midnight, with another coming onto the property around 3:30 a.m. The men damaged two vessels, the Lady Swift and Rich Passage. Police say one of the men used a fire extinguisher to smash windows on both ferries before he untied them from the dock. Both “drifted a short distance into the water,” Bremerton police said. A power cable was also damaged and disconnected.
Wednesday morning, Bremerton police said a 36-year-old Bremerton man was identified through security footage and community tips. Police say he was booked on “multiple charges.”
A second suspect accused of stealing alcohol from a nearby bar and breaking a vehicle’s window was not mentioned in Wednesday’s update from Bremerton police.
Kitsap Transit Executive Director John Clauson called the incident a “wake up call” in an interview with We on Tuesday.
“We thought the security we had here was sufficient. We never envisioned somebody trying to scale the gate,” said Clauson, who said security upgrades are being explored.
He was glad damage to the ferries was minimal.
“There’s a lot of potential if they knew how to start the vessel, you know, we’ve got the Navy sitting right next to us. So there could have been a much worse situation.”
