ROY, Wash. — A Halloween trick-or-treat event at McKenna Park in Roy turned tragic this afternoon when a large tree fell onto event booths, killing one person and trapping several others.
According to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office, emergency responders received the call at 1:02 p.m. on Saturday. The incident occurred during a community Halloween celebration that was attended by an estimated 40 to 80 people.
Authorities have confirmed one fatality. At the time of this report, between five and seven people remain trapped under the fallen tree, and extrication efforts are ongoing. Multiple other individuals sustained injuries, though the extent of those injuries has not yet been disclosed.
Emergency crews remain on scene working to free those still trapped beneath the tree. The Sheriff’s Office has not yet released information about what may have caused the tree to fall or whether weather conditions played a role in the incident.
A Wind Advisory is in place for most of western Washington until 5 a.m. on Sunday. Peaks gusts so far were in Tacoma (60 mph) and Fort Lewis (46 mph), according to the National Weather Service.
