TACOMA, Wash. — A Tacoma mother is speaking out after her 12-year-old son was found dead earlier this month inside a senior living complex.
Castonya Taylor said her son, Preston James Hemingway-Lux, died Sept. 19 in a unit at the Vintage at Tacoma apartments, where they had been staying with a friend.
“It was me and Preston against the world. Most of the time everything together,” Taylor told We.
Taylor said she tried to wake her son for school that morning, but he told her he was too tired — something he had also mentioned the night before. Hours later, she found him unresponsive in the bedroom with a small amount of blood near his nose and mouth.
“He didn’t move at all. So I said, Preston. And then I got down next to him, and when I shook him, he was like heavy. And I just started screaming,” she said.
Taylor called 911 and tried to revive her son.
“When I blew into him and his cheeks puffed up and then nothing. That let me know he was already gone,” she said.
She described Preston as a loving child who gave her strength.
“Thank you for showing me a love I will probably never get anywhere else. For being strong when I needed him to be,” Taylor said.
Tacoma police said the case is being investigated as a suspicious death, though there were no signs of external trauma. The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office is working to determine the cause. The office told the family they may know a cause of death within the next couple of weeks.
The family has created a GoFundMe campaign to help pay for funeral expenses.
