KIRKLAND, Wash. —The Kirkland Police Department (KPD) is asking for the public’s help in solving a murder case from 2006.
The request comes as the department launches a new cold case web page to serve as a central place where the community can learn about ongoing investigations and share information with detectives.
The case highlighted on the page so far is the homicide of 23-year-old John Austin Schuoler, who died of blunt force trauma.
His lifeless body was discovered in his bedroom by his roommate on Sept. 15, 2006.
Schuoler, who was known as John LeBar in high school, was living at the Sunset Shores apartment complex while he worked at a local Kirkland restaurant.
During a rare day off work, Schuoler had lunch with a friend at Cucina-Cucina in Kirkland and then went to Old Navy in Bellevue to shop for clothes.
He called his mom, Elaine “Lani,” Faye, at 3:47 p.m., but she didn’t answer, and he left her a voicemail. It was the last time she heard from her son.
Around 7 p.m., he went back to his apartment, where he hung out with friends and his roommate, and chatted on his computer and cellphone until about 10 p.m.
His body wasn’t discovered until the next night on Sept. 16, when his roommate got home from work.
KPD said there was no evidence that the apartment was forcibly entered, and investigators suspect Schuoler’s killer was someone he knew.
One clue is that a hunter green “Army-style” canvas backpack bought at REI was missing from Schuoler’s room.
Schuoler’s mother died on Aug. 3, 2012, before she learned who killed her son. She was laid to rest next to her only child.
KPD’s goal is to keep cold cases such as Schuoler’s in the public eye in the hopes that anyone with information will come forward.Email the KPD investigations division supervisorat this link, and visit theKPD Cold Case page here. The page will be updated as more unsolved cases are added or new information is discovered.
