SEATTLE — A 95-year-old Seattle woman is making history again — this time for her unmatched pickleball skills.
Joyce Jones of Seattle was recognized by Guinness World Records as the oldest female competitive pickleball player in the world — for the second year in a row.
“I actually did break my record. And I will be in the 2025 book this year,” Jones said.
Now 95-and-a-half years old, Jones said she still plays mainly for fun.
“I do have other activities, but I love pickleball,” she said with a laugh.
Jones’ connection to pickleball goes back to the sport’s roots. She and her husband were friends with Washington Congressman Joel Pritchard, who invented pickleball in 1965 at his Bainbridge Island home.
Over the decades, Jones has competed in more than 100 tournaments across the country, earning medals and meeting new friends along the way. Next week, she’ll head to Utah to take part in the Huntsman World Senior Games.
“I’m kind of proud that I’m still 95 and not only playing in tournaments but winning in tournaments,” Jones said while showing off her medals.
Her secret to staying healthy? “I’ve never tried smoking, drinking, drugs — anything that would affect my body,” she said.
Jones encouraged others to keep moving and stay positive, no matter their age.
“From 2 to 100, just keep having fun,” she said. “I plan on playing until I’m 100.”
