Sample Interview Questions and Answers

Question 1: Describe a situation where you had to navigate a research vessel through rough seas and inclement weather. How did you ensure the safety of yourself and your crew?

I recall a particular instance where we were conducting a test fishing survey in Puget Sound during a storm. The winds were strong, and the waves were crashing against the boat. To ensure our safety, I immediately activated the VHF radio to alert nearby vessels and shore stations of our position. I also consulted with my crew to review our emergency procedures, ensuring that we had all necessary equipment on board and that everyone was properly secured. We adjusted our course to take advantage of the wind direction, which allowed us to ride out the storm more comfortably. Throughout the journey, I closely monitored weather forecasts and adjusted our plan accordingly. Finally, upon arrival at our survey site, I ensured that my crew was aware of their roles in securing the vessel and equipment for safe deployment.

Question 2: How would you approach conducting a recreational angler interview during a test fishing survey? What specific questions or techniques would you use to gather accurate data?

When conducting an angler interview, I prioritize establishing a rapport with the fisherman to ensure they feel comfortable sharing their experiences. Initially, I'd ask open-ended questions like 'Can you tell me about your catch today?' or 'How long did it take you to land that salmon?' This helps gather context and gain insight into their fishing techniques. Subsequent questions would focus on specific details such as the type of gear used, location fished, and duration of the trip. I'd also use a combination of visual aids like diagrams and photographs to help illustrate key points and make the conversation more engaging. By employing these techniques, I've found that anglers are often willing to share valuable information, which contributes to our understanding of recreational fisheries.

Question 3: Describe your experience with electronic coded-wire tag (CWT) detection devices for identifying tagged salmon during a test fishing survey.

In my previous role as a research assistant, I was trained in the use of CWT detectors to identify and handle tagged fish. During our surveys, we'd utilize the wand detector to scan each caught salmon, checking for electronic tags implanted in their bodies. If a tag was detected, we'd carefully record its unique identifier and note any relevant details about the fish's condition. I've found that these devices are highly effective in accurately identifying tagged fish, which is crucial for our research on salmon migration patterns and stock assessments. When working with CWT detectors, it's essential to follow proper protocols to ensure accurate data collection and minimize handling stress on the tagged fish.
