The Opportunity:

The Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission (WSCJTC) is seeking an experienced instructor with expertise in Firearms and Use of Force instruction who is ready to make a meaningful impact on the future of law enforcement.  

In this role, you will support the Applied Skills Training Division (ASTD) - Firearms program by delivering quality instruction in accordance with federal and state laws, model policies, and agency curriculum to recruit officers in an academy setting. You will serve as both a role model and instructor, upholding the WSCJTC’s core values of leadership, integrity, dignity, and accountability as you carry out the duties of this position.

Duties

Duties assigned to this position include (but are not limited to):

• Provide instruction and training in classroom, practical, and mock scenarios for Criminal Justice courses such as Firearms and Use of Force.  
• Liaise, collaborate, and support Program Manager, Criminal Justice Trainer 4, internal and external subject matter experts, and the WSCJTC Curriculum Unit with development and updates to course curricula as directed. 
• Provide guidance, mentorship, and support for contractor instructors. 
• Maintain order and perform duties within the academy and advanced training atmosphere, including motivating classes as a group and students individually in accordance with agency policy, procedures, and directives.
• Model and reinforce ethical, professional, and trustworthy behavior to support the ideal of officers who earn the trust of their communities.
• Grade and accurately report student progress and evaluations in accordance with WSCJTC approved curriculum.
• Maintenance of student attendance records and class files in accordance with the Washington State and agency specific retention schedules.
• Respond to public records and assist records manager with requests.
• Track and report student injuries following agency procedures.
• Support and assist with Inventory of equipment, consumables, and materials necessary to facilitate training.
• Provide feedback and/or testing and evaluation of proposed curriculum, training aids, or mock scenarios at the direction of Criminal Justice Trainer 4 or ASTD Program Manager.
• Keep up on best practices, current case law, and other essential skills to maintain current knowledge base from which to draw.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications/Experience:

• At least three (3) years of experience as a certified peace officer (law enforcement or military) or certified corrections officer (in a county or city/municipality) in an assignment that required the application of physical force. 

-OR- 

• At least five (5) years of experience as a trainer of criminal justice personnel (law enforcement, military, or corrections (county or city/municipality), specifically in the areas of firearms, de-escalation, or patrol tactics.

-AND-

• Understanding of adult teaching principles and methodology. 
• No sustained use of force complaints for the past three years. 
• Any complaints within the last three years must be satisfactorily explained. 
• Able to understand, explain, and model the Washington State Attorney General Use of Force Policy daily. 
• Quality analysis, strategy and problem-solving skills. 
• Strong work ethic, self-directed, and able to work in a team-teaching environment. 
• Effective communicator. 
• Understanding and support for the agency's diversity, equity, and inclusion goals 

Preferred/Desired Qualifications:

• A degree in Criminal Justice. 
• At least five (5) years of experience as a certified peace officer (law enforcement or military) or certified corrections officer (county or city/municipality) in an assignment that required the application of physical force.
• Understanding of WSCJTC protocols and procedures.
• WSCJTC Handgun Instructor Course certification or other equivalent firearms certification.
• WSCJTC Patrol Tactics Instructor certification.
• WSCJTC Use of Force CDT Instructor certification.
