Sample Interview Questions and Answers

Question 1: A child in your care becomes aggressive and resistant to de-escalation techniques. How would you handle this situation?

In a situation where a child is becoming aggressive and resistant to de-escalation techniques, I would first ensure my own safety by maintaining a safe physical distance from the child and avoiding direct eye contact, which can be perceived as confrontational. Next, I would use active listening skills to acknowledge the child's feelings and concerns, while also setting clear boundaries and expectations for their behavior. If necessary, I would seek support from colleagues or supervisors to ensure a calm and controlled environment is maintained. Additionally, I would assess the situation to determine whether any underlying factors such as trauma or medical needs may be contributing to the child's behavior. Based on this assessment, I would work with the child to develop a plan for de-escalation and crisis prevention, which may involve teaching coping skills, providing emotional support, or accessing additional resources as needed.

Question 2: You have been assigned a new caseload of four youth who are experiencing multiple challenges, including trauma, behavioral issues, and difficulties with daily living skills. How would you prioritize their needs and develop an individualized treatment plan?

When working with a new caseload of complex youth, I would first conduct a thorough assessment to identify the unique strengths, challenges, and goals for each child. This would involve reviewing their medical, psychological, and educational records, as well as conducting interviews with the children themselves, their families, and other relevant stakeholders. Next, I would use this information to develop an individualized treatment plan that takes into account their specific needs, goals, and preferences. This might involve prioritizing trauma-informed care strategies such as grounding techniques, deep breathing exercises, or art therapy, while also addressing daily living skills deficits through structured activities and support. In addition, I would work with the children to identify and prioritize their own goals and aspirations, which would inform our treatment planning and goal-setting. Throughout this process, I would maintain open communication with the children's families and other stakeholders, ensuring that they are informed and engaged in the treatment planning process.

Question 3: You have observed a PCCC1 staff member struggling to manage a situation involving a youth who is experiencing an acute emotional crisis. How would you provide guidance and support to this staff member?

If I were to observe a colleague struggling to manage a challenging situation, I would first ensure that they are physically safe by intervening if necessary. Next, I would approach them calmly and respectfully to offer support and guidance, using a non-judgmental tone and language. I might say something like, 'Hey, I've got your back – let's work together to de-escalate this situation.' Then, I would take the time to assess the situation alongside my colleague, discussing strategies for managing the crisis while prioritizing both the youth's and staff member's safety. If needed, I would also seek additional support from our leadership team or other colleagues who have expertise in crisis intervention. Throughout this process, I would maintain a focus on empathy, active listening, and clear communication to ensure that my colleague feels supported and empowered to manage future situations effectively.
