Sample Interview Questions and Answers

Question 1: Describe a situation where you had to de-escalate a high-risk situation involving a patient who was experiencing physical and emotional distress.

In my previous role as a Registered Nurse in a psychiatric hospital, I encountered a situation where a 16-year-old patient was becoming increasingly agitated due to a disagreement with another patient. The situation escalated quickly, with the patient pacing back and forth in their room, shouting, and eventually, threatening self-harm. I immediately assessed the situation and determined that it required de-escalation. I used active listening skills to acknowledge the patient's feelings and concerns, while also maintaining a firm but empathetic tone. I explained to them the potential consequences of their actions and offered alternative solutions to resolve the issue. Through this calm and non-confrontational approach, I was able to successfully de-escalate the situation, preventing further escalation and ensuring the patient's safety. In collaboration with the treatment team, we developed a new plan to address the underlying issues contributing to the behavior.

Question 2: How do you ensure that patients are educated on social skills and functional skill development in a way that is tailored to their individual needs and abilities?

To ensure that patients receive comprehensive education on social skills and functional skill development, I use a patient-centered approach. This involves conducting thorough assessments of each patient's strengths, weaknesses, and learning style. For example, one patient may benefit from visual aids, while another may prefer interactive exercises. I work closely with the interdisciplinary team to develop tailored treatment plans that address specific areas of need. Additionally, I make use of evidence-based interventions such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and functional behavior assessment (FBA) to identify target behaviors and create effective intervention strategies. Regular progress monitoring and adjustments to the education plan ensure that patients remain engaged and motivated throughout the treatment process.

Question 3: Can you describe your experience with administering medications and treatments to patients in a psychiatric setting?

In my previous role as a Registered Nurse, I had extensive experience administering medications and treatments to patients in a psychiatric setting. This included administering psychotropic medications for anxiety, mood stabilization, and antipsychotic therapy. I also provided injections of vaccines, such as the influenza vaccine, and administered IV medications when necessary. My practice is guided by evidence-based guidelines and protocols to ensure that patients receive safe and effective treatment. I maintain accurate records of medication administration, including dosages, times, and any adverse reactions or side effects. Furthermore, I collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to monitor patient response to treatments, make adjustments as needed, and develop individualized plans for follow-up care.
