Sample Interview Questions and Answers

Question 1: A patient diagnosed with chronic mental illness presents with significant anxiety and agitation. Describe your approach to assessing this patient's occupational performance, including any specific evaluation tools you would use.

When assessing a patient with chronic mental illness presenting with anxiety and agitation, I would first ensure a safe and calm environment for the evaluation. I would use standardized assessment tools such as the Occupational Performance History Interview (OPHI) or the Canadian Occupational Performance Scale (COPM) to understand the patient's current level of occupational performance. These tools help me identify areas of difficulty and prioritize goals for treatment. In addition, I would also observe the patient's behavior, communication style, and interactions with others to gain a better understanding of their strengths and challenges. As an Occupational Therapist, my goal is to empower patients to take control of their own lives, and this assessment process helps me identify areas where they need support.

Question 2: Describe your experience developing occupation-based group interventions for clients with similar needs and goals. How do you ensure that these interventions are culturally sensitive and inclusive?

In my previous roles as an Occupational Therapist, I have developed group interventions for clients with similar needs and goals by first identifying the specific occupational performance gaps or difficulties they face. I then work with other healthcare professionals to design a group intervention plan that addresses these needs. To ensure cultural sensitivity and inclusivity, I engage with patients from diverse backgrounds through active listening, observing their experiences, and using language that is respectful and accessible. I also incorporate evidence-based practices such as Trauma-Informed Care and culturally responsive care principles into my interventions to ensure they are patient-centered and inclusive.

Question 3: A multidisciplinary team member suggests a treatment goal for a patient that you believe may not be the most effective approach given the patient's specific needs. How would you communicate your concerns and collaborate with the team to find an alternative solution?

If I have concerns about a suggested treatment goal, I would first seek clarification from the team member to ensure I understand their perspective. Then, I would respectfully express my concerns and provide evidence-based reasoning for why I think an alternative approach may be more effective. This might involve consulting relevant literature or seeking input from other team members who may share similar concerns. Together, we can work towards a consensus on the best course of action that takes into account the patient's unique needs and our collective expertise as healthcare professionals.
