Sample Interview Questions and Answers

Question 1: Describe your experience with treatment planning and implementation for patients with behavioral health conditions.

In my previous role as a Psychiatric LPN, I was responsible for participating in treatment planning with interdisciplinary teams to develop individualized care plans for patients with complex behavioral health needs. I collaborated with the registered nurse, psychiatrist, and other team members to identify patient goals, prioritize interventions, and coordinate care. For example, I worked with a patient who had a history of suicidal ideation and self-harm behaviors. We developed a plan that included medication management, individual therapy sessions, and skills training in coping mechanisms and stress reduction techniques. Through regular assessment and evaluation, we adjusted the treatment plan as needed to ensure optimal outcomes for the patient. My experience has taught me the importance of ongoing communication with patients, families, and healthcare teams to achieve successful treatment outcomes.

Question 2: How would you safely intervene with a patient who is exhibiting aggressive behavior, such as physical violence or verbal threats?

When responding to a patient in crisis, I follow our facility's de-escalation protocol, which emphasizes non-pharmacological interventions whenever possible. First, I maintain a safe distance from the patient and call for backup support from other team members if needed. Next, I use active listening skills to acknowledge the patient's feelings and concerns, while also setting clear boundaries and expectations for safe behavior. If the situation escalates, I may use verbal de-escalation techniques, such as redirecting the patient's attention or using empathetic statements to calm them down. In extreme situations where physical safety is at risk, I would follow our facility's policy for restraint procedures, while ensuring that these measures are used only as a last resort and in accordance with state regulations.

Question 3: What strategies do you use to advocate for patients' health maintenance and clinical care needs?

As a Psychiatric LPN, I recognize the importance of advocating for patients who may have difficulty articulating their own needs or preferences. To address this challenge, I take an active role in monitoring patient conditions that could impact their care and treatment, such as medication side effects, mental status changes, or changes in behavior. I communicate regularly with patients, families, and healthcare teams to ensure that everyone is aware of the patient's condition and any necessary adjustments to the plan of care. For example, I worked with a patient who required frequent medication checks due to concerns about medication adherence. By engaging in open dialogue with the patient and their family members, we developed strategies to enhance patient engagement and improve treatment outcomes.
