Sample Interview Questions and Answers

Question 1: What would you do if a patient in your care was exhibiting aggressive behavior and refused to engage in therapy?

When dealing with a patient who is exhibiting aggressive behavior and refusing to engage in therapy, I would first ensure the safety of myself and others by assessing the situation and identifying potential triggers for their behavior. I would then attempt to de-escalate the situation using empathetic listening skills and open-ended questions to help the patient articulate their concerns and feelings. If necessary, I would involve other members of the treatment team, such as the nurse or a crisis intervention specialist, to provide additional support. Throughout the process, I would maintain a calm and non-confrontational demeanor while prioritizing the patient's safety and well-being.

Question 2: How do you assess and address the psychosocial needs of patients with co-occurring disorders?

When assessing the psychosocial needs of patients with co-occurring disorders, I would conduct a comprehensive biopsychosocial assessment to identify areas of need, such as housing stability, employment status, and social support. I would then develop a treatment plan that addresses these needs through referrals to community resources, counseling services, and other interventions tailored to the patient's specific situation. Additionally, I would collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to ensure that all aspects of the patient's care are being addressed, including medical and therapeutic needs. Throughout the process, I would maintain ongoing communication with patients, families, and other stakeholders to ensure that their needs are being met and adjusted as necessary.

Question 3: What strategies do you use to engage patients who have been resistant to treatment or have had limited success with previous therapies?

When working with patients who have been resistant to treatment or have had limited success with previous therapies, I would employ a variety of engagement strategies tailored to their unique needs and circumstances. This might include using motivational interviewing techniques to increase the patient's motivation for change, collaborating with family members or other support systems to help the patient build a support network, and exploring alternative therapeutic approaches that may be more effective for them. Additionally, I would strive to establish a genuine rapport with the patient by demonstrating empathy, respect, and an understanding of their experiences and perspectives. By doing so, I aim to create a safe and non-judgmental space where patients feel comfortable engaging in therapy and working towards their goals.
