Sample Interview Questions and Answers

Question 1: Describe a specific situation where you had to de-escalate a high-risk behavioral health crisis. How did you apply trauma-informed principles and communication strategies to ensure patient safety and promote recovery?

In my previous role at a psychiatric facility, I encountered a patient experiencing acute agitation due to a history of trauma. I first ensured my own safety and then used a calm, non-confrontational tone to acknowledge their feelings, saying, 'I see you're really upset right now. Let’s work together to find a way to feel safer.' I applied trauma-informed principles by avoiding triggers, such as sudden movements or loud voices, and focused on building trust. I collaborated with the interdisciplinary team to assess the situation, administered medication as prescribed, and provided follow-up support to address underlying trauma. This approach de-escalated the crisis and allowed the patient to regain stability, demonstrating my ability to prioritize safety while fostering a therapeutic environment.

Question 2: How would you develop a comprehensive care plan for a patient with complex behavioral health needs, ensuring alignment with person-centered care and long-term recovery goals?

To develop a care plan, I would begin by conducting a thorough assessment of the patient’s medical, psychological, and social history, including their preferences and goals. I would collaborate with the interdisciplinary team—such as psychiatrists, social workers, and therapists—to ensure a holistic approach. For example, if a patient had a history of substance use and trauma, the care plan would include trauma-informed interventions, medication management, and skill-building activities like social skills training. I would also involve the patient in goal-setting to promote autonomy and engagement. Regular monitoring and adjustments would be made based on progress, ensuring the plan remains dynamic and responsive to their evolving needs, while aligning with long-term recovery and community reintegration objectives.

Question 3: Explain how you would handle a situation where a patient’s behavior escalated during a group therapy session, and how you would communicate with the team to ensure coordinated care.

If a patient’s behavior escalated during a group session, I would first remain calm and use de-escalation techniques, such as active listening and validating their emotions, to prevent the situation from worsening. For example, I might say, 'I can see this is really difficult for you. Let’s take a moment to breathe together.' Simultaneously, I would discreetly signal to the team leader or security to provide support without overwhelming the patient. After the immediate crisis was managed, I would hold a debrief with the interdisciplinary team to discuss the incident, review the patient’s history, and adjust the care plan if necessary. Clear communication with the team would ensure consistency in approach, such as modifying group therapy strategies or increasing one-on-one support, to prevent future escalations and promote a safe, therapeutic environment.
