Sample Interview Questions and Answers

Question 1: Describe a situation where you had to administer medication to patients with behavioral health issues. How did you ensure their safety and well-being during this process?

In my previous role as an LPN in a psychiatric unit, I recall administering medication to patients who were experiencing severe agitation and aggression. To ensure their safety, I closely monitored the patients' behavior and physical condition before, during, and after medication administration. I also made sure that they were not taking any medications that could interact with each other or exacerbate their conditions. In addition, I maintained a safe environment by having extra staff members present to provide support if needed. Following administration, I closely monitored the patients for any adverse reactions and documented my observations in their medical records.

Question 2: Can you give an example of a time when you had to intervene therapeutically with a patient who was exhibiting aggressive behavior? What strategies did you use to de-escalate the situation?

In my experience as an LPN, I recall a situation where a patient became physically aggressive towards another patient. To prevent harm and maintain a safe environment, I quickly assessed the situation and employed active listening skills to understand what was triggering the patient's behavior. I also used empathetic language to acknowledge their feelings and concerns, which helped to calm them down. Additionally, I worked with other members of the treatment team to develop a plan to address the root causes of their aggression and provide individualized support to reduce recurrences.

Question 3: Describe your experience working as part of an interdisciplinary treatment team in a psychiatric setting. How did you contribute to patient care and what did you learn from this experience?

As an LPN on an interdisciplinary treatment team, I worked closely with psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care to patients. My role was to provide direct nursing care, monitor medications, and participate in treatment planning. What I learned from this experience is the importance of collaboration and communication among team members to ensure patient-centered care. Through my participation on this team, I gained a deeper understanding of psychiatric conditions and developed skills in prioritizing tasks, managing time, and advocating for patients' needs.
