Sample Interview Questions and Answers

Question 1: Describe your experience with heavy-duty cleaning tasks such as stripping, waxing, or sealing floors using industrial equipment. How do you ensure safety and efficiency during these tasks?

In my previous role as a custodian at a residential facility, I regularly used industrial floor scrubbers and waxers to maintain high-traffic areas. I prioritized safety by wearing appropriate PPE, ensuring proper ventilation when using chemicals, and following manufacturer guidelines for equipment operation. To maintain efficiency, I scheduled deep cleaning during off-peak hours and used checklists to systematically cover all areas, which helped reduce rework and ensured consistent quality.

Question 2: How would you handle a situation where you noticed a resident with an intellectual disability struggling to access a sanitized restroom?

I would first ensure the restroom was fully sanitized and stocked with necessary supplies, then approach the resident calmly to offer assistance. I’d use clear, simple language to explain my intent and ask if they needed help. If they agreed, I’d guide them respectfully while maintaining their dignity. If they declined, I’d ensure the area remained accessible and report any potential hazards to supervising staff to prevent future issues.

Question 3: Explain your approach to conducting facility rounds to check for security and maintenance issues, such as leaving lights on or unlocked doors.

During my rounds, I systematically check all areas, starting with high-traffic zones and secured spaces. I use a checklist to ensure consistency, noting any issues like unsecured doors, lights left on, or potential hazards. If I find a problem, I document it immediately and report it to the appropriate team for prompt resolution. I also communicate with staff to reinforce protocols and ensure everyone is aware of their role in maintaining a secure environment.
