Sample Interview Questions and Answers

Question 1: How would you calculate and adjust feed size and amount fed to a pond population of 10,000 fish with an average weight of 0.5 kg each?

To calculate the daily feed requirements for this pond population, we can use the following formula: Total Daily Feed (TDF) = Pond population x Average weight x Growth rate. Assuming a moderate growth rate of 1%, TDF would be approximately 50 kg per day. However, to adjust the feed size and amount fed as needed, I would regularly monitor the pond's water quality, fish behavior, and growth rates. If I notice any signs of underfeeding or overfeeding, such as poor water quality or stunted fish growth, I would adjust the feed accordingly. For example, if the water temperature increases to 20°C, I might increase the feed by 10-15% to account for the increased metabolic rate of the fish. Similarly, if I notice any signs of disease or stress in the fish population, I would reduce the feed amount and frequency to minimize waste and prevent further stress on the fish.

Question 2: How would you perform water quality analysis and discharge monitoring reports (DMR) as required by the Department of Ecology to maintain hatchery discharge permits (NPDES)?

To ensure compliance with NPDES regulations, I would follow standard operating procedures for water sampling and testing. This includes collecting water samples from designated points throughout the facility, such as intake pipes and outfall pipes, at regular intervals (e.g., weekly or bi-weekly). The samples would be sent to an accredited laboratory for analysis, including parameters such as pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, ammonia-nitrogen, and suspended solids. I would also use in-situ testing devices to monitor water quality parameters such as turbidity, conductivity, and alkalinity. Based on the results of these analyses, I would adjust facility operations to maintain optimal water quality and ensure compliance with NPDES regulations. This might involve adjusting flow rates, nutrient additions, or other processes to minimize the impact of the hatchery on downstream water bodies.

Question 3: How would you respond to an alarm indicating a failure in the diesel generator system, which provides backup power for critical systems such as pumps and life support?

In the event of an alarm indicating a failure in the diesel generator system, I would first investigate the cause of the alarm by checking the control panel and reviewing any relevant logs or records. If the issue is related to a simple maintenance requirement, such as low oil levels or clogged fuel filters, I would perform the necessary repairs or replacements. However, if the problem appears more complex, requiring specialized expertise or equipment beyond my capabilities as a Fish Hatchery Specialist 2, I would immediately notify agency personnel and follow established protocols for escalating the issue to a higher-level technician or maintenance specialist. In either case, I would ensure that critical systems remain operational by implementing temporary measures such as manual pumping or backup power sources, if available.
