Sample Interview Questions and Answers

Question 1: What is your experience with electronic sampling equipment, specifically coded wire tag (CWT) detection devices? How have you ensured accurate detection and retrieval of CWTs in previous roles?

In my previous role as a fisheries technician, I had extensive experience working with CWT detection devices. I understand the importance of accurate detection and retrieval of CWTs for stock assessment in fisheries modeling. To ensure accuracy, I always followed standard operating procedures (SOPs) for CWT detection and retrieval, which included careful observation of the fish's snout and use of a magnifying glass to locate the tag. I also made sure to document all observations and results thoroughly. In one instance, I detected a CWT in a Coho salmon and successfully retrieved it, which helped inform management decisions for that particular stock. My experience with CWT detection devices has taught me the importance of attention to detail and careful observation when working with sensitive equipment.

Question 2: How would you approach collecting biological data from recreational and commercial salmon catches, including DNA samples, scales for aging, and sex ratios?

When collecting biological data, I follow a systematic approach to ensure accuracy and completeness. First, I carefully examine each fish for any identifying characteristics such as adipose fin marks or tags. For those with CWTs, I use the detection device to confirm the presence of a tag and record relevant information. Next, I take DNA samples from the muscle tissue using a sterile swab and store them in a designated container. I also collect scales for aging purposes by carefully removing the scale from the fish's nape area using a pair of forceps. Finally, I record the sex ratio of each sample to provide valuable insights into population dynamics. Throughout this process, I maintain detailed records and ensure that all samples are handled and stored properly to preserve their integrity.

Question 3: Describe your experience with data management software such as iForms, Microsoft Teams, and Outlook. How would you use these tools to document and report sampling data in a timely manner?

In my previous roles, I have used various data management software including iForms, Microsoft Teams, and Outlook to collect, store, and analyze data. I am proficient in using electronic forms to record sampling data accurately and efficiently. I also use Microsoft Teams to collaborate with colleagues and supervisors on data review and analysis, as well as to receive updates and feedback on my work. Additionally, I use Outlook for daily communication and reporting purposes, including sending emails to stakeholders and uploading reports to shared folders. To document and report sampling data in a timely manner, I prioritize tasks, set deadlines, and communicate regularly with team members to ensure seamless data flow.
